Interpol DFEG 2024
EVENTS
The 9th #DFEG Digital Forensics Expert Group event, held at Edinburgh Napier University from June 19-21, 2024, brought together an international assembly of digital forensics experts in beautiful Edinburgh, Scotland.
This gathering featured delegates from law enforcement, technology vendors, service providers, and academia. Despite being the only participants from the Philippines, we felt immersed in an enlightening and diverse exchange of ideas on evolving industry practices.
See our key takeaways from this 3 day event...
-
Discussions emphasized that all crimes now have a digital footprint, underscoring the necessity for comprehensive digital forensics. Attendees, including our team at Astria, explored the implications of AI in forensics, agreeing that while AI can automate tasks and enhance efficiency, it will never replace the essential analysis and judgment of human investigators.
-
The benefits of triage tools were also spotlighted, especially in handling vast data volumes and improving case response times, a point of great interest given the Philippines' challenges with OSAEC cases. Intelligence-led policing and the forensic analysis of vehicle systems emerged as crucial areas for future investment and training in law enforcement.
-
Other highlights included advancements in automation, audio-video forensics, and the potential of apprenticeship programs to address talent shortages. Overall, the event fostered global collaboration and equipped participants with innovative strategies to advance digital forensics capabilities in their respective regions.
The Future of Digital Forensics
EVENTS
A special briefing event co-hosted by Astria, Exterro and the US Embassy, with a guest speaker from Microsoft Philippines.
Speaker/Guest Line Up:
Paul Taylor, Senior Commercial Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Manila
Ian Rainsborough, RVP Channels at Exterro
Dale Pascual Jose, National Technology Officer at Microsoft Philippines
Jonathan Shorter, Vice President of International Technical Engineering at Exterro
The event highlighted how the West Midlands Police, one of the UK's largest forces, collaborated with Exterro and Microsoft to expedite digital forensics investigations and reduce backlogs. It featured a Q&A session on the advancements in technology enabling front-line policing and government agencies to access and enhance digital forensics. Over 25 law enforcement and government agencies in the Philippines attended this highly successful event.
“Issues that resonate with me on why Forensics is so important. Counter terrorism, domestic abuse, anything that involves human trafficking, child exploitation. In all of these instances, MINUTES truly matter.
If we can allow you to do your jobs better that means some poor child, some beaten partner in a domestic abuse case or worse a terrorist doesn’t get to do what they were planning to do, because we were able to get there ON TIME.
To me, that’s what makes me get up in the morning!”
- Ian Rainsborough, Exterro's Regional Vice President of Channels, during a keynote speech in which he brings onboard a decade of Forensic and Security experience to stage
